Since the 1950’s, the Pomona Valley Bird Alliance (PVBA) has been focused on celebrating and saving birds in Southern California’s Pomona Valley. A chapter of the National Audubon Society, we are a volunteer organization with 1,000 members based in Claremont, California with no paid staff and no “brick and mortar” office. Our chapter territory covers portions of Los Angeles, San Bernardino and Riverside Counties (see map). We are engaged in a variety of educational, citizen-science and conservation projects that help protect our local birds and biological diversity. PVBA is an independent 501(c)3 Nonprofit Organization and all donations are tax deductible. Membership is open to everyone.  Contact us at pomonavalleyaudubon@gmail.com

Mission Statement:

Our mission is to promote the protection, appreciation and enjoyment of birds and other wildlife through recreation, education and conservation.

PVBA offers

  • Meetings and Programs – Monthly meetings on the fourth Thursday of each month from September through June are held at the Hughes Community Center, in Claremont. Meetings feature a bird identification session (to help you become a better birder), light refreshments, announcements, door prizes and a presentation by a guest speaker on topics ranging from the latest scientific research to birds of the world to conservation and habitat restoration. Meetings are free and everyone is invited.
  • Free Guided Field Trips – Come birding with us! PVBA experienced guides lead a variety of field trips to different locations each month (September – June) and to local birding hot spots. Most are free and all ae open to everyone. The First Sunday of the Month Family Friendly Bird Walk at the California Botanic Garden in Claremont is an ideal starting point for new birders (loaner binoculars are available) and is popular with experienced birders as well.
  • Ongoing Conservation Projects – Including the Eyes and Ears on Burrowing Owls Conservation Project and the Dan Guthrie Bird Oasis on the Thompson Creek Trail in Claremont.
  • Education and Community Outreach – We love sharing the wonder of birds with people of all ages! In local classrooms, we provide owl pellets for students to explore, giving them a hands-on way to discover the food web and learn what owls eat. Out in the community, you might spot us chatting with visitors about the birds in their backyards, sharing interactive displays, or sparking curiosity in children at locations like the San Dimas Canyon Nature Center, the California Botanic Garden, the Fairplex (LA County Fairgrounds), and festive gatherings like Claremont’s Village Venture. We also give talks at libraries, retirement communities, clubs, and more. Wherever we go, our goal is simple – to help people connect people with nature through birds and learn how to protect them.

As one of the smaller chapters of the National Audubon Society we are an entirely volunteer run organization that relies on the generosity of our members to plan and organize events. We warmly welcome anyone who would like to get involved on the governing board or in one of our projects.
